THOMAS CHASE: I grew up in Plant City, Florida, which like Fort Myers, was a small agricultural community in the 50s, 60s and early 70s. I moved here in 1980 right after I graduated from law school and went to work with a large firm.
In 1991, I became Supreme Court certified as a mediator. In doing that I handled a variety of cases. What I saw more than anything else was personal injury cases. That got my attention and I shifted my focus in my private practice to representing injured people in personal injury claims.
It’s important for an attorney to do more than just practice law. For that reason I’ve been an active member of our chamber of commerce, I’ve been involved as a member of the nuisance abatement board. I’ve helped teach martial arts and karate with our YMCA. I’ve also been recently appointed to the new Citizen’s Review Committee that will help explore issues between citizens and law enforcement.
Growing up in a small town was a blessing for me because it taught me that everybody’s watching and therefore it’s really important to be straightforward and direct with everyone you deal with.
